Being the most valuable public company in the world is a nice claim to fame. A few different companies have held the crown of late. For years it was Apple , before Amazon took the top spot last year. That felt predictable. But then something strange happened. As Apple and Amazon struggled, Microsoft soared to the lead. The 1990s tech-behemoth was suddenly back on top.

Recently, Microsoft came in ninth on something called the Axios Harris Poll 100, which ranks companies on their reputation with the public. Ninth! That’s 15 spots higher than Netflix (NFLX), 23 higher than Apple(AAPL), 32 above Alphabet (GOOGL), and 33 over Tesla (TSLA). All of those companies have been falling—in fact, all but Apple made the list of top 10 declines. But Microsoft has been tiptoeing higher.
